A rose grown in a 12 inch container will require three to five feeds during its growing cycle. Each one of these feeds will produce results. A money plant in the same container, on the other hand, will turn out to be wilted and weak. Tulsi will perform better on even fewer feeds. Plants dictate how they are fed, yet most terrace gardens are treated as if plants have no say in their feeding.
The reason this matters more on a terrace than in a garden bed is volume. A pot holds a few kilos of mix and nothing else, so there is no surrounding soil to dilute an over-dose or to buffer a pH swing. Everything you add stays until it is used or washed out of the drainage hole, which is why the plant-by-plant question is worth answering properly rather than reaching for one bag for everything.
Why does one feed suit a rose and starve a lemon tree?
Because the plants are doing different jobs, and feeding follows the job.
The rose produces several flushes of growth and flowers over an extended period, which is costly, necessitating the requirement for a constant supply, which suggests regular fertilisation. Lemons or other citrus species in pots will be producing leaves and flowers and creating fruit for a much longer period while being particularly sensitive to micronutrients like iron and zinc, because when the mixture becomes alkaline, micronutrients become unavailable.
Most of the herbs in the kitchen garden, including Tulsi, are cultivated basically for the leaves and harvested continuously, thus do not require much nitrogen or fertiliser. A money plant is a climber that does well with very little care, and fertilising it too much only leads to fragile growth, with long, spaced-out stems and leaves.

What does a rose need through the year?
Roses are the most indulgent plants on terraces and people often underfeed them due to concerns about root burn.
Why does most rose-feeding advice not fit India?
In Indian conditions the cultivation of roses differs significantly from what is recommended in most of the international literature on this topic. Most recommendations regarding rose fertilisation arise from the temperate climate type of gardens, where the plant has a proper dormancy period and undergoes severe pruning.
In virtually all regions of North India, summer is the limiting season, not winter, and most of the plant's growth occurs at a time when any European rose would be dormant. Dietary routines developed from such advice end up being implemented at the wrong point of the year.
When should a rose be fed?
Between October and March, the productive rose season is in full swing in North India, with feeding processes following close behind. The addition of oil cake at the beginning of the season helps the plant grow well, while other doses aid in the following milestones.
A mature plant in a pot with a diameter of 12 inches will be fine with three to five applications of feed during the season. Since oil cakes break down gradually through the action of soil microorganisms, the effect of feeding will take place over a period of weeks, not instantaneously.
What roses do not desire is nourishment through the hottest months. From April to June across most of North India the plant is surviving rather than growing, and water is the limiting factor. Pushing nutrients into a plant that cannot use them just leaves salts in the mix.
What about potassium at flowering?
Potassium matters at flowering, which is where wood ash comes into the conversation, and where the biggest mistake gets made. Wood ash does supply potassium, and it also raises soil pH substantially. On a mix that is already neutral or alkaline, which describes most of North India, that is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.
What do lemon and other citrus pots need?
Little and often, and with one eye on the leaves.
Citrus in pots is the plant that most commonly shows a specific, diagnosable problem: yellowing between green leaf veins, usually on newer growth. That pattern points at iron or zinc becoming unavailable, and it is very often a pH problem rather than a shortage of the nutrient itself. As soil alkalinity increases and pH rises above 7.0, phosphorus, iron, boron, manganese, copper and zinc all become harder for the plant to take up.
That is why wood ash is the wrong input for a lemon pot in most Indian conditions. It is exactly the amendment that pushes pH in the direction citrus does not want. A situation of interveinal chlorosis of a citrus pot will usually worsen when the application of wood ash takes place irrespective of the dose of potassium in this amendment.
Why do citrus pots drop fruit?
Usually because the tree set more fruit than it can carry, not because you fed it wrong. Citrus plants demand moderate but regular fertilisation during the extended growing season, as well as a well-draining mixture. Oil cake makes a suitable fertiliser for them, needing to be used more frequently and in smaller amounts than for roses.
Citrus trees in containers also produce fruit, and some of that fruit drop is normal rather than a feeding failure. For example, lemon trees will actually produce more fruit than they can hold and drop that excess fruit a few weeks later, which can cause panic among novice gardeners and lead them to think that their feeding programme is faulty.
Sharp decline in the size of large fruits indicates a different kind of signal which pertains more to watering than to nutrition. Applying fertilisers will not resolve the watering issue, while applying fertilisers to a stressed pot will aggravate the situation.
What do tulsi, curry leaf and kitchen herbs need?
Much less than most people give them, and this is the group where restraint pays.
Tulsi grown hard on rich feeding produces large soft leaves with noticeably less aroma, because the essential oils that make it worth growing are not produced by a plant racing to make leaf. A light dose at planting and very little afterwards is enough. The same logic applies to most culinary herbs.
There is a reason for the effectiveness of restraint in this case which does not have much to do with how plants grow. Herbs are cut from time to time, which means tulsi and mint plants are trimmed every week, and the usual cutting stimulates fresh growth and also helps produce the result of a feeding process. If one feeds the plant and cuts back too much, the result will be soft and juicy plant material capable of attracting insects and lacking any flavour.
The exception is curry leaf and the one plant in this list that could justify the additional cost of getting proper feeding. This is because it is a small tree rather than a herb. The curry leaf is continually harvested, making it highly responsive to fertiliser application at the beginning of the growing season as well as after a rigorous harvest. It is susceptible to leaf-eating pests, which is the reason why neem seed material becomes relevant, as it works both in soil pests management and as a soil amendment.
What do chilli, tomato and brinjal pots need?
Two feeds, timed to two different jobs, and the second one is the one most home growers skip.
A vegetable in a pot needs nitrogen early, while it is building the frame of leaf and stem that will carry the crop. Oil cake worked into the mix at planting handles this well, and neem seed material worked in alongside does the same job while also acting on soil pests, which matters in the monsoon when fungus gnats and soil grubs peak.
The switch occurs during flowering. When a plant begins to flower, excessive nitrogen prompts it to produce leaves rather than fruits, resulting in a tomato plant that is completely flourishing yet devoid of fruit.
The objective here is potassium, and this is one instance in home gardening where wood ash is useful rather than hazardous. The amount needed is small, less than 10 g for a 10 to 12 inch pot used once and mixed into the soil surface.
Timing in North India follows two windows rather than four seasons. February to March carries the summer sowing, and October to November is the stronger of the two across NCR. The occurrence of feeding at the time of planting, followed by feeding as the crops flower, is considered sufficient for the entire cycle of vegetables in the vegetable pots.
What do money plant and other foliage pots need?
Almost nothing, and that is not neglect. It is what the plant is adapted to.
The money plant, the snake plant, pothos, and the other foliage plants develop typically in low-nutrient places. They grow either as climbing plants or as understorey plants, taking advantage of any leaf litter reaching them, and they are capable of thriving in poor conditions.
When people do regular feeding, they encounter the typical failure that they misinterpret as success: long stems with considerable distances between the leaves, pale colour, and weak and drooping growth. They only need a single feed of fertiliser at the beginning of the growing season, and some of the plants can thrive for many years without receiving any, being in the same pot.
Indoor position makes this stronger, not weaker. A plant inside a room gets a fraction of the light of one on an open terrace, so it photosynthesises less, grows more slowly, and needs correspondingly less. Indoor pots are the most commonly over-fed pots in any home.
Which feeding mistakes kill more terrace plants than under-feeding?
Three, in order of how often they do damage.
Over-feeding. Salts accumulate in a pot because there is nowhere for them to go, and the symptoms look confusingly like drought: browning leaf edges, wilting despite moist soil, and stalled growth.
When one sees a wilting plant, it is typically assumed that it is lacking something, which leads to the practice of feeding it. Unfortunately, this assumption is misguided. The way to rectify this situation is to pour water through the plant until it drains freely from the drainage hole. After that, the plant should be left alone for a period of time.
Wood ash used as a general fertiliser. It is a genuinely useful potassium source with a narrow safe dose, and gardeners can push pH above 9 quickly by treating it as a routine input. Small quantities, no more than about once a year, and never on a pot showing the yellowing pattern described above.
Feeding at the wrong time. A dose in peak May heat or in the depth of a North Indian January, when the plant is dormant or merely surviving, does nothing useful and leaves residue behind.
What about the mix itself?
There is a fourth mistake worth adding because it is invisible until it is severe. Pots are rarely refreshed. A mix that has been in the same container for three years has lost structure, compacted, and holds water badly whatever you feed it, and no amount of input fixes a mix that no longer drains. Repotting or at minimum replacing the top few inches of mix each season does more for most tired plants than any fertiliser will.
An explanation of the processes taking place in oil cakes is necessary, since they play the major role in practically all types of organic terrace gardening. The action of oil cakes is directly connected to their decomposition by soil microorganisms; therefore, the oilcakes need some time to become effective. Since their impact on the soil recedes after one month, that is, oil cakes are perfect for regular fertilising throughout the season, but no immediate results will be seen right after application of oil cakes.

Frequently asked questions
Can you use the same fertiliser for every plant?
You can, and most terrace gardens do, but results vary widely because feeding needs vary widely. A general organic feed suits roses, vegetables and curry leaf reasonably well. It over-feeds foliage plants and herbs, and it does not address the micronutrient problems citrus in pots commonly develops.
How often should potted plants be fed?
It depends on the plant and the season rather than on a calendar. Heavy feeders like roses take three to five feeds across a growing season, vegetables want feeding at planting and again at fruiting, and foliage plants often need one a year. Nothing benefits from feeding while dormant or in peak summer heat.
Do indoor plants need less fertiliser than outdoor ones?
Yes, and usually much less. Indoor light levels are a fraction of terrace levels, so growth is slower and nutrient demand falls with it. Indoor pots are the most frequently over-fed pots in most homes, and the symptoms of too much feed look very similar to the symptoms of too little water.
Is cow dung manure enough on its own for pots?
For undemanding plants, often yes. Well-rotted cow dung manure is a reasonable general amendment that improves structure as well as feeding. It tends to be low in potassium relative to what flowering and fruiting plants want, so roses, chillies and tomatoes usually do better with something added at flowering.
Should fertiliser go on dry or moist soil?
On moist soil, always. Applying a dry feed to a dry pot concentrates it against roots that have no water to buffer it, which is how root burn actually happens. Water the pot first, apply, then water lightly again to settle the material into the surface.
Can you over-fertilise a potted plant?
Easily, and it is more common than under-feeding. A pot cannot disperse excess the way open ground can, so salts build up. Signs are browning leaf margins, white crust on the soil surface, and wilting in soil that is clearly moist. Flush the pot thoroughly with water and stop feeding until it recovers.
